SUMMARY:RAeS Greener by Design Specialist Group Webinar - Contrail Manageme
nt: Exploding the fuel penalty myth
DESCRIPTION:This RAeS Greener by Design Specialist Group webinar explores c
ontrail management and challenges the commonly held belief that aircraft i
ncur a fuel penalty when deviating to avoid contrails. The session examine
s a fundamental misconception in aviation: that commercial aircraft fly mi
nimum fuel routes. In reality\, aircraft operate on economically optimum r
outes that balance the competing costs of fuel consumption and flight time
. The webinar investigates the practical implications of altitude changes\
, speed adjustments\, and atmospheric characteristics on fuel requirements
when implementing contrail avoidance strategies under real operational co
nditions. The presentation will provide insights into how airlines can pot
entially manage contrails whilst maintaining economic efficiency. This web
inar is free to attend for both Royal Aeronautical Society members and non
-members. It forms part of the RAeS's charitable mission to share aerospac
e knowledge\, inspire future professionals\, and promote understanding of
aviation across the wider community. The session will be delivered by Prof
essor Ian Poll\, Emeritus Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Cranfield
University\, who brings over 50 years of experience in aeronautics. Profes
sor Poll has held numerous prestigious positions\, including RAeS Presiden
t (2001) and President of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sc
iences (2008-10). He has served on several Government Advisory Committees
and is an Honorary Fellow of the AIAA and ICAS. The webinar is part of a b
roader Greener by Design series running through November 2026\, covering t
opics including hydrogen for fuel cell aircraft\, sustainable aviation fue
l mandates\, and UK trials for contrail management.

SUMMARY:RAeS Greener by Design Webinar: SAF mandates/linkage with EU/ETS/fi
 nancial implications
DESCRIPTION:Aviation\, being one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise\, wi
ll need a range of solutions. Up to 70% of emissions reductions will come
from SAF use by 2050 in Europe and the UK. This webinar examines what aspe
cts of SAF mandates are working\, what needs to be improved and what else
needs to be implemented to accelerate the production of SAF.\nThe event fe
atures Jonathon Counsell\, Group Sustainability Director at International
Airports Group. Jonathon holds a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
from Imperial College London and an MBA from INSEAD Fontainebleau France.
In July 2015\, he became group head of sustainability for the Internation
al Airlines Group\, overseeing sustainability strategy across five airline
 s: Aer Lingus\, British Airways\, Iberia\, Level and Vueling. In January 2
025\, Jonathon was appointed IAG Group Director of Sustainability. He was
also appointed as a member of the UK government's Jet Zero Task Force expe
rts group in December 2024. In 2024\, he was awarded an honorary doctorate
from Cranfield University for his outstanding and sustained contribution
to embedding sustainability across the aviation sector\, and in 2025\, he
received the Air League's President's Meritorious Service Award for his ti
reless dedication and commitment to sustainability and nurturing the next
 generation of talent.

SUMMARY:RAeS Greener by Design Webinar - Bridging Asia’s UCO supply to Eu
 rope’s SAF
DESCRIPTION:Europe's SAF mandates face a critical feedstock bottleneck as u
sed cooking oil (UCO) supply falls short of refinery demand. This webinar
examines how Asia's abundant waste lipid resources can bridge the gap thro
ugh integrated supply chains\, exploring the technical\, regulatory and co
mmercial frameworks needed to connect feedstock-rich regions with Europe's
growing SAF production capacity.\nThis webinar is part of the Greener by
Design Series and features expert speakers including Grazvydas Bajoras\, D
irector of iFuel Ltd and Board Advisor to Sharpagroup LLC (Netherlands)\,
and David Arinze\, Managing Director of Sharpagroup LLC (Netherlands)\, wh
o is developing a 215\,000 mM HEFA SAF production plant in Europe. The eve
nt takes place online on 18 November 2026.

SUMMARY:RAeS Greener by Design Webinar: Contrail Management - UK trials Ope
 ration Blue Skies
DESCRIPTION:Operation Blue Skies is a proposed airspace contrail trial in N
orth Atlantic Airspace\, initially recommended by the Department for Trans
port's Jet Zero Council. This webinar focuses on verifying contrail mitiga
tion at an airspace scale to determine what level of observationally verif
ied contrail mitigation is possible under the constraints of airspace with
minimal disruption to both ANSPs and operators.\nThe session features Pau
l Hodgson\, Google Technical Lead for Operation Blue Skies\, who leverages
AI forecasting and observational systems to demonstrate contrail avoidanc
e at an airspace scale. Dr Hodgson also serves as Technical Fellow at cont
rails.org and a teaching Bye-Fellow at Churchill College\, Cambridge. His
background includes a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of C
ambridge\, where he subsequently led the Aviation Impact Accelerator as Te
chnical Director at the Whittle Laboratory\, developing system models to h
elp industry and policymakers map the path to climate-neutral aviation. Hi
s research and development experience spans energy and climate technologie
s across academia and industry\, including sustainable aviation\, biofuel
production\, carbon capture and hydrogen systems.\nThis webinar is part of
the RAeS Greener by Design Series\, a comprehensive programme examining v
arious aspects of sustainable aviation\, including contrail management\, h
ydrogen fuel cells\, SAF mandates and supply chain logistics.
