SUMMARY:Prestwick Branch: How New Research is Changing Our Understanding of
  Rotorcraft Aerodynamics
DESCRIPTION:This December 2026 lecture explores how new research is advanci
ng our understanding of rotorcraft aerodynamics. As the aerospace industry
enters a new era with rapid development of innovative vehicles and techno
logies\, a deep comprehension of the underlying mathematical physics is es
sential. This knowledge enables developers to build confidence in their pr
oducts and to evaluate the practical viability of new concepts.\nThe event
features Dr Richard E Brown\, an experienced Aerospace Engineer with a 30
-year track record in modelling and understanding aircraft and helicopter
aerodynamics. Dr Brown is the founder and leader of Sophrodyne Aerospace\,
an R&amp\;D consultancy specialising in the analysis and understanding of
flight vehicles across a diverse spectrum—from hypersonic re-entry vehi
cles to subsonic drones\, helicopters\, eVTOL aircraft\, and airships. The
company is renowned for providing deep design insights through flexible a
nd transparent models supported by advanced computational techniques.\nDr
Brown holds a PhD and is a Chartered Engineer\, Fellow of the Institution
of Mechanical Engineers\, and Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. In
2023\, he was awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society's prestigious Bronze
Medal in recognition of his contributions over several decades to rotorcr
aft aerodynamics understanding. Throughout his career\, he has assisted nu
merous companies and organisations worldwide in developing new aerodynamic
tools and proposing innovative solutions to complex aerodynamic design ch
allenges. He combines deep theoretical knowledge with practical applicatio
n\, delivering effective and innovative approaches to aerodynamic problems
.\nThis lecture is hosted by the RAeS Prestwick Branch\, one of Scotland's
two active branches of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
