SUMMARY:Bristol Aero Talk: Vulcan Black Buck sorties (Paul Shepherd)
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Aero Talks is a free lecture series presented by Aerosp
ace Bristol\, featuring guest speakers and experts sharing fascinating sto
 ries on topics including space\, flight\, engineering\, and WW2 history. T
his particular talk will be delivered by Paul Shepherd\, a retired RAF nav
igator\, on Tuesday 13th October at 19:15. Shepherd will discuss his invol
vement in the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict\, examining the operational a
nd logistic challenges of deploying a large-scale military force at extrem
e range with minimal third-party support. The lecture focuses particularly
on the Vulcan Black Buck sorties\, which represented the longest-range bo
mbing operations achieved at that time. The talk will be held in the Makin
g Studio\, located next to the museum's main entrance at Aerospace Bristol
\, Patchway. Entry is completely free and no booking is required\; attende

SUMMARY:Brough Branch: Advancing active flow control technologies for more
 efficient aircraft
DESCRIPTION:Brough Branch Lecture: Advancing active flow control technologi
es for more efficient aircraft\nThis hybrid event\, held on 14 October 202
6\, explores active flow control technologies designed to enhance aircraft
aerodynamic performance. The lecture will focus on pulsed jet actuation\,
a particularly promising advancement that demonstrates significant advant
ages over traditional steady jet injection methods.\nActive control of air
flow over aircraft wings can substantially improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Pulsed jet actuation is capable of suppressing flow separation far more e
ffectively than conventional approaches whilst requiring substantially red
uced mass flow. The lecture will present outcomes from the Clean Sky 2 WIN
GPULSE project\, which aimed to demonstrate pulsed jet actuator concepts e
xceeding current state-of-the-art standards—specifically\, those reducin
g net mass flow by a factor of at least 3.\nAttendees will hear detailed r
esults from wind tunnel testing and high-fidelity simulations conducted th
roughout the project.\nThe speaker is Mark Jabral PhD MEng MRAeS from the
University of Nottingham\, who served as Principal Investigator on the WIN
GPULSE project. His research focuses on fluid flow control for drag reduct
 ion\, encompassing experimental aerodynamics\, optimisation\, and vehicle
system integration studies. Mark holds both MEng and PhD degrees in Aerosp
ace Engineering from the University of Manchester and serves as Vice Chair
of the Royal Aeronautical Society Aerodynamics Specialist Group.\nThe eve
nt runs from 19:30 to 20:45 BST and is available both in person at Cotting
ham Parks Golf Club\, East Yorkshire\, and online via Microsoft Teams for
 those unable to attend physically.

SUMMARY:RAeS Handley Page Named Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RAeS Handley Page Named Lecture 2026 explores electric vert
ical flight and British innovation in eVTOL aircraft development. Electric
vertical take-off and landing aircraft represent a new generation of full
-scale aircraft capable of sustained flight\, integrating advances in batt
eries\, electric propulsion\, lightweight structures and highly integrated
flight-control systems.\nSpeaker Simon Davies\, Chief Test Pilot at Verti
cal Aerospace\, will draw on Britain's long tradition of challenging estab
lished ideas about aircraft design and operation. The lecture examines how
electric propulsion fundamentally changes aircraft architecture and behav
iour\, and why the close integration of propulsion\, aerodynamics and flig
ht controls is central to eVTOL development.\nKey topics include what elec
tric propulsion makes possible\, the distinctive challenges of flight test
ing novel configurations\, and how simulation\, ground testing and increme
ntal flight testing build confidence in aircraft. Davies will explore how
the flight envelope of such configurations can be safely expanded\, drawin
g on Vertical Aerospace's experience of designing\, building and flying el
ectric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.\nThe lecture represents an
exciting new chapter in Britain's aviation innovation history. The enablin
g technologies are no longer theoretical—they are operational and flying
today. Simon Davies brings over 3\,500 hours of experience across more th
an 85 aircraft types\, having completed over 16 flights in the VX4 prototy
pe\, including the first full transition flight from hover to cruise and b
 ack in April 2026.

SUMMARY:Hatfield Branch 2026 Sir Geoffrey de Havilland Lecture: The Opportu
nities and Challenges of Low Earth Orbiting Satellites
DESCRIPTION:The orbit closest to home has never been busier — or more imp
ortant. In just a few short years\, low Earth orbit has been utterly trans
formed. Where once a handful of satellites circled a few hundred kilometre
s above us\, thousands now race around the planet every ninety minutes\, b
eaming high-speed broadband to remote communities\, carrying global commun
ications\, and capturing Earth observation imagery of astonishing detail.\
nThis revolution is reshaping how we connect\, navigate\, farm\, forecast
and respond to disaster. It is opening space to new nations\, new companie
s and new ideas at a pace never seen before. But with opportunity comes pr
essure. Space today is more contested\, congested and critical than ever.
Mounting debris threatens the orbits we rely on\, competition for room and
radio spectrum is intensifying\, and our growing dependence on these syst
ems raises urgent questions of resilience and security.\nJoin us to explor
e how we reached this remarkable moment\, what is truly at stake\, and whe
re low Earth orbit goes next. The lecture will be preceded by the presenta
tion of university prizes and followed by a buffet.\nSpeaker: Patrick Wood
FRAeS\, a retired Senior Vice President from Airbus Space Systems and for
mer CEO of Surrey Satellites and Technology Ltd. He is a UK Space Fellow w
ith over 30 years' experience in the Space Sector\, involved in the design
 \, build\, test and launching of satellites.\nProgramme: 18:30 – Introdu

SUMMARY:Farnborough Branch: Electromagnetic Warfare (EW) in the Air Domain
 - Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:This RAeS Farnborough Branch lecture examines Electromagnetic W
arfare (EW) in the air domain\, tracing its evolution from the early 20th
century to the present day and considering future developments. The presen
tation explores how defence and security operations depend increasingly on
the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) as the primary medium for information
collection and dissemination. Beginning with radio's invention in the late
19th century and its widespread adoption for communication\, the lecture
covers how radar emerged as a transformative technology within 50 years\,
significantly impacting military operations. More recent developments in i
nfra-red and laser systems are also examined as key elements in modern def
ence and security applications.\nThe lecture explains how participants in
military operations must maintain their own ability to use the EMS whilst
occasionally denying or controlling opponents' access to it. EW encompasse
s three broad operational areas: Electromagnetic Surveillance\, Electromag
netic Defence\, and Electromagnetic Attack. The speaker will provide insig
hts into equipment innovations spanning 1900 to present day\, illustrating
how past developments have shaped air operations whilst highlighting chal
lenges facing future air capability development.\nSpeaker Steve Roberts br
ings extensive expertise\, having studied Engineering and Computer Science
at Cambridge University whilst sponsored by GEC Marconi. His career inclu
des 20 years leading engineering teams conducting trials of Electronic War
fare equipment on platforms including Tornado\, Harrier and Typhoon\, foll
owed by 10 years as EW Technology Director at BAE Systems and EW Capabilit
y Director for Selex. He concluded his career as Strategy Director for Sel
ex and Leonardo Electronics\, overseeing product portfolios encompassing a
ll electronic equipment forms\, UAVs\, and EMSO applications across all op
 erational domains.

SUMMARY:Bournemouth Branch 2026 Sir Alan Cobham Lecture: How Alternative Pr
opulsion Changes Aircraft Design\, Range and Payload
DESCRIPTION:How do alternative propulsion technologies affect aircraft desi
gn\, range\, payload and operational use\, and what constraints are impose
d by current technology and fundamental physics? Electrification\, hydroge
n and other alternative propulsion technologies are widely promoted as the
future of aviation\, driven by the aim of reducing dependency on traditio
nal hydrocarbon fuels. However\, whilst some concepts have shown promise w
hen used in small general aviation aircraft\, several programmes have enco
untered major technical and economic challenges\, with some high-profile p
rojects being significantly delayed\, scaled back or cancelled.\nThis lect
ure examines the engineering realities behind alternative propulsion syste
ms and energy storage technologies. Using first-principles analysis and re
al-world examples\, it explores how different propulsion concepts affect a
ircraft design\, and the resulting impacts on range\, payload and operatio
nal capability. Physical limitations of current state-of-the-art technolog
ies are quantified using simple engineering principles\, drawing where nec
essary on the laws of aerodynamics and thermodynamics\, but without requir
ing specialist knowledge.\nAttendees will gain insights that should enable
them to evaluate announcements of new aircraft designs and propulsion con
cepts from an informed engineering perspective and better understand the t
rade-offs involved in translating such concepts into practical operational
aircraft. The evening will start with a buffet reception at 18:30 to whic

SUMMARY:RAeS Cierva Named Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RAeS Cierva Named Lecture 2026 explores the challenges\, su
ccesses and future of UK rotorcraft research through a personal perspectiv
e spanning over 40 years in helicopter research and development. For decad
es\, the UK has maintained a strong helicopter research base supporting mi
litary helicopter capability needs. Since the 1950s\, conventional rotorcr
aft have seen maximum speeds and payload fractions increase by over 30%\,
whilst overall safety has improved dramatically. Helicopters now operate i
n demanding environments from icing conditions to hot\, high and dusty ext
remes—achievements resulting from substantial investments in rotor aerod
ynamics\, airframe and rotor dynamics\, materials and propulsion systems.
Advanced design tools and experimental techniques have accelerated these d
evelopments. However\, the path to success has faced numerous obstacles fr
om changing research priorities\, variable funding levels and limited test
facility availability. Dr Richard Markiewicz\, the speaker\, will share p
ersonal experiences covering UK helicopter research successes whilst exami
ning key focus changes over four decades\, concluding with exploration of
modern challenges extending into the future. Dr Markiewicz is a distinguis
hed aeronautical engineer with extensive experience in helicopter R&amp\;D
and project support for the UK Ministry of Defence. He graduated in Aeron
autical Engineering from Imperial College in 1981 and obtained an MSc in A
ircraft Design from Cranfield University in 1982. He attained a PhD from C
ranfield Institute of Technology in 1990 whilst working at the Royal Aircr
aft Establishment. Since joining the Defence Science and Technology Labora
tory in 2003 as Principal Rotorcraft Systems Engineer and Capability Advis
or\, he has managed research programmes across UK industry and academia wi
th international collaborators. He maintains strong academic links through
the UK Vertical Lift Network and has held posts including Visiting Profes
sor at the University of Bristol. Lectures are free for both members and n
on-members. The society welcomes a varied audience\, and attendees under 1
8 may attend when accompanied by a guardian. The event is supported by Saf

SUMMARY:Yeovil Branch: G-LYNX 40 years on! a modern aerodynamic perspective
  on a historical milestone
DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago\, G-LYNX\, a modified Lynx helicopter\, raised
the maximum speed achieved by a conventional helicopter to a remarkable 40
0km/h – a record that stands to this day. The advances in rotorcraft tec
hnology required to achieve this feat were the culmination of a research p
rogramme extending over several decades\, involving some of the best minds
in British academia and industry.\nDr Richard E Brown will explain the ba
sic science behind the speed record and place the innovations that enabled
this achievement in the context of contemporary knowledge. He will then d
escribe how the pioneering research has contributed to and inspired modern
understanding of rotorcraft aerodynamics\, in terms much broader than oft
en appreciated.\nThe late F. John Perry holds a prominent place in the his
tory of the speed record. In his later years\, John collaborated directly
with Richard in several areas of rotorcraft aerodynamics. The talk will co
nclude by underlining John's legacy as an engineer whose success in forgin
g detailed theoretical analysis into an intuitive understanding of rotorcr
aft behaviour continues to inspire subsequent generations of engineers.\nD
r Brown is well-known internationally for his broad contributions to helic
opter and rotor aerodynamics and their impact on vehicle safety. Following
a long academic career at Glasgow University and Strathclyde University\,
he now co-directs Sophrodyne Aerospace\, a research and design consultanc
y specialising in advanced mathematics and computational methods in aerosp
ace. He has authored over one hundred technical papers and is a Fellow of
both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engi
neers. In 2023\, Dr Brown received the Bronze Medal of the Royal Aeronauti
cal Society for his decades of contributions to helicopter aerodynamics. I
n 2024\, he received the Extraordinary Work in Vertical Flight award from
the Vertical Flight Society (UK) for pioneering work on Vortex Ring State\
, and in 2025\, the Royal Aeronautical Society Silver Medal for fundamenta
l contributions to eVTOL and helicopter outwash understanding.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Hunt for Red October by Kevin Hart
DESCRIPTION:Join Kevin Hart for an evocative talk on 'Hunting for Red Octob
er'\, the search for the final resting place of his great uncle\, Flight L
ieutenant Reginald Samuel Sailes. Beginning in 1987 with an unexpected pho
tograph\, Kevin's quest honours his great uncle's memory—a man nicknamed
'Red' during his RAF service\, inspired by the 1935 song 'Red Sails in th
e Sunset'. Reg was born in New Cross\, London\, on 3 October 1915\, hence
the poignant link to October. He served in the RAF from 29 April 1941 to 2
 7 June 1951\, whilst Kevin's own RAF career spanned 5 February 1998 to 4 F
ebruary 2016. The talk recounts the tragic events of 27 June 1951\, when R
eg and his navigator departed RAF Hemswell at 0810 hours for a routine cro
ss-country low-level navigation and bombing exercise carrying HE ordnance
—a sortie Reg had successfully completed many times before. As the aircr
aft approached Lincoln Cathedral\, eyewitnesses observed grey smoke from t
he starboard engine. Three farm workers from Warren Farm\, Cold Harbour\,
Lincolnshire\, watched the stricken aircraft trail black smoke over Warren
Wood. Reg was attempting an emergency landing at RAF Spitalgate\, Grantha
m\, where a passing-out parade was scheduled. The aircraft caught fire and
cartwheeled into the ground at Warren Farm\, Cold Harbour\, at 0825 hours
. This compelling historical account combines personal family history with
wartime aviation heritage. The talk will be held in the NAAFI function ro
om at 13:30\, followed by tea and cake at 15:00. Please note that admissio
n to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is not included in the tick

SUMMARY:Talk: The first RAF 'Top Guns' at Red Flag
DESCRIPTION:Join the Army Flying Museum for a fascinating daytime talk on W
ednesday 4th November at 10:30am featuring Squadron Leader Stuart Ager\, w
ho led the first RAF contingent to participate in the legendary Red Flag e
xercise.\nIn the middle of the 1970s\, No. 208 Squadron RAF reformed with
Buccaneer aircraft based at RAF Honington in Suffolk. As a frontline squad
ron\, 208 Squadron flew various missions across Germany\, Scandinavia and
beyond\, maintaining readiness for ground attack operations and nuclear st
rike capabilities.\nRed Flag\, developed by the United States Air Force\,
represents the largest air-war exercise designed to enable fighter and fas
t-jet aircrews to survive and flourish in combat operations. In 1977\, 208
Squadron was selected as the first RAF squadron to participate in this pr
estigious exercise. Squadron Leader Stuart Ager\, accompanied by navigator
David Wilby\, led the inaugural flight of four aircraft to Nellis Air Bas
e near Las Vegas. Over the subsequent two weeks\, the USAF acknowledged th
e Buccaneers and their aircrew as formidable opponents.\nDuring this talk\
, Stuart will recount his extensive experience flying the Buccaneer across
  208\, 237 OCU\, XV and 16 Squadrons\, including his participation in no f

SUMMARY:Farnborough Branch 2026 Roger Green Lecture: From Human Factors to
Safety Intelligence - 25 Years on the Front Line of Aviation Safety
DESCRIPTION:The Farnborough Branch Roger Green Lecture features Bob Simmons
FRAeS\, Co-Founder of Baines Simmons\, discussing the evolution of human
factors in aviation safety over 25 years. The lecture traces the journey f
rom Roger Green's pioneering work in moving human factors from the laborat
ory into operational aviation environments through CHIRP and accident inve
stigations\, to contemporary safety management practices.\nBob Simmons dra
ws on extensive experience working with over 800 civil and defence organis
ations—from major airlines and national authorities to small maintenance
organisations—to examine how human factors thinking has been integrated
into operational reality. The presentation progresses from mandated human
factors training through error management and just culture principles\, t
o modern safety risk management and integrated management systems under IC
AO Annex 19\, EASA Part-145.A.200 and the MAA/EMAR framework.\nBuilding on
foundational work by James Reason and Patrick Hudson\, the lecture argues
that human factors remains the load-bearing foundation of Safety Manageme
nt Systems rather than being superseded by them. Simmons brings a candid p
ractitioner's perspective\, having both contributed to human factors failu
res and experienced their consequences first-hand\, including as a passeng
er in an aircraft accident.\nUsing real cases from civil and defence secto
rs\, the presentation examines why safety cultures built on just culture p
hilosophies are essential to whether management systems deliver genuine as
surance or merely compliance documentation. The lecture concludes by consi
dering what these principles mean as automation\, artificial intelligence
and new market entrants reshape the operational aviation landscape.\nSpeak
er: Bob Simmons has worked in aviation since 1978\, beginning with eleven
years' Royal Air Force service on Victor tanker and Tornado fleets before
qualifying as a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer. Since 1994\, he ha
s held safety-specific roles including service as an Airworthiness Surveyo
r with the UK Civil Aviation Authority\, where he was responsible for main
 tenance and continuing airworthiness policy.

SUMMARY:Loughborough Branch: What Formula 1 can teach about aerospace - and
  what it can't
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores how Formula 1's engineering culture\, org
anisation and processes translate to aerospace and defence. Drawing on sev
enteen years in Formula 1 as Chief Aerododynamicist\, the speaker examines
how Formula 1 treats every car as a continuously evolving prototype\, wit
h development priorities driven by quantified performance sensitivity meas
ured in lap time\, tyre behaviour\, energy usage and aerodynamic efficienc
y.\nHigh-fidelity simulation\, rapid validation and disciplined prioritisa
tion enable thousands of engineering decisions at remarkable speed\, with
track running serving primarily as correlation rather than experimentation
. The lecture considers how these principles apply to aerospace\, particul
arly as autonomous systems and uncrewed air vehicles evolve rapidly. Engin
eering organisations must increasingly deliver capability through fast\, d
igitally enabled iteration rather than traditional sequential development.
\nHowever\, the discussion examines Formula 1's limitations. Relentless pr
essure for immediate performance discourages long-term technology developm
ent\, whilst conservative adoption of disruptive technologies and comparat
ively lightweight design assurance fall short of aerospace certification e
xpectations.\nThe conclusion proposes that future engineering organisation
 s should combine Formula 1's culture of rapid\, data-driven iteration\; in
novation from research and advanced technology programmes\; and aerospace'
s disciplined governance\, traceability and certification practices. This
blueprint applies to organisations developing next-generation high-perform
 ance autonomous systems.

SUMMARY:Manchester Branch: Jetopetra
DESCRIPTION:Urban Air Mobility is often presented as a solution to congesti
on\, with VTOL aircraft transporting people and packages between cities an
d city blocks. However\, the more immediate applications lie in disaster r
esponse\, regional manned transport\, and cargo that must be delivered qui
ckly to locations where helicopters struggle to operate quietly\, safely\,
or economically.\nThis lecture explores fluidics—a control methodology
recently reintroduced at the University of Manchester—which maintains ai
rcraft attitude using blown air rather than moving control surfaces. Ameri
can counterparts\, including Aurora Flight Sciences\, are developing this
technology at full scale through DARPA's CRANE programme and the X-65 airc
raft. Jetoptera takes this concept further by treating fluidics as a propu
lsion system itself\, integrating it with wing design through an upper-sur
face-blown wing configuration at an unprecedented level.\nJetoptera's Flui
dic Propulsive System (FPS) is a bladeless propulsion architecture that ge
nerates thrust from directed\, augmented airflow rather than spinning roto
rs. This enables VTOL and high-speed cruise from a single adaptive system\
, delivering atonal noise levels approximately 40 dB below equivalent-powe
r conventional helicopters\, cruise speeds two to three times faster than
traditional helicopters or multirotor designs\, and no exposed blades on t
he ramp. This combination opens operational sites and missions unavailable
to conventional rotorcraft due to noise\, downwash\, or speed limitations
 .\nWith a growing J-Series waitlist spanning cargo\, agricultural\, and pa
ssenger aircraft concepts\, Jetoptera is now transitioning the FPS from a
propulsion innovation into a family of aircraft purpose-built for silent\,
  fast logistics operations.

SUMMARY:Loughborough Branch: Written in the stars - A321XLR Flight Test Pro
 gramme
DESCRIPTION:Airbus announced in early 2018 a significant development to its
A321 family of aircraft\, with the principal objective of extending the a
ircraft's range to more than 4\,500 nautical miles. This ambitious goal re
quired extending fuel capacity and increasing the maximum take-off weight
(MTOW) to 101 tonnes—a remarkable achievement considering the A321's win
g\, structure\, and landing gear were originally designed and certified fo
r just 68 tonnes.\nThis lecture presents the technical modifications made
to the A321XLR and details the comprehensive flight testing programme requ
ired to achieve CS25 certification. Jim Fawcett\, Lead Flight Test Enginee
r at Airbus\, will explain the engineering challenges and solutions\, comp
lemented by behind-the-scenes anecdotes illustrating the flight test team'
s exceptional work ethic. The EASA recognised their efforts\, noting: "Des
pite immense technical and non-technical pressures\, the Airbus Flight Tes
t Team exhibited a remarkable blend of technical expertise\, innovative pr
oblem-solving\, and an unwavering commitment to safety. Their exemplary at
titude and performance ensured that every aspect of the A321XLR not only m
et\, but sometimes exceeded\, the stringent CS25 certification requirement
s\, certainly setting a new benchmark for long-range single-aisle aircraft
."\nSpeaker Jim Fawcett is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Member of the R

SUMMARY:RAeS Lecture: RAF Defford - Telecommunications Research Establishme
 nt
DESCRIPTION:This RAeS lecture explores the fascinating history of flight tr
ials for government research and development of radar\, tracing back to 19
35 when radio waves from a BBC transmitter were reflected by a Heyford bom
ber\, enabling its detection by a ground receiver.\nDuring World War II\,
the Special Duty Flight provided aircraft to serve as targets for ground r
adar systems and to conduct trials of airborne radar for the RAF and Fleet
Air Arm. As the conflict progressed\, the Telecommunications Flying Unit\
, and later its successor the Radar Research Flying Unit\, tested and eval
uated systems for government radar establishments until the unit's disband
ment in 1977.\nThe lecture describes the diverse range of aircraft employe
d for these critical tasks and illustrates unique examples of engineering
innovation that were required—often on a scale otherwise unknown outside
the aircraft industry. Dr Dennis Williams\, a materials scientist with li
felong aviation passion and current Trustee of the Malvern Radar and Techn
ology History Society\, will present this compelling account of RAF Deffor

SUMMARY:Prestwick Branch: Beyond Net Zero - How Aviation Can Serve People a
 nd Planet
DESCRIPTION:The January 2027 lecture promises to be interesting and inspira
tional\, exploring aviation's role in sustainability and humanitarian impa
ct. Aviation's sustainability challenge extends beyond reducing carbon emi
ssions\; it encompasses the positive impact aviation can have globally. Av
iation for Good\, a UK-registered charity\, uses aviation to deliver human
itarian aid\, medical assistance and disaster relief to isolated communiti
es worldwide.\nRachel Gardner-Poole OBE FRAeS will explore how aviation ca
n respond to the urgent need to decarbonise whilst continuing to connect p
eople\, support economies and reach communities where aircraft provide acc
ess to medical care\, education\, disaster relief and essential supplies.
Drawing on practical examples\, she will consider how collaboration\, inno
vation and a stronger sense of purpose can help aviation become both more
sustainable and a greater force for good.\nRachel is a senior aviation lea
der with extensive experience across sustainability\, innovation and trans
formation. She has held leadership roles at the UK Civil Aviation Authorit
y\, the UK Space Agency and previously chaired the UK Jet Zero Council Zer
o Emission Flight Delivery Group. As Director of Aviascia\, Rachel helps m
ajor organisations navigate complex change\, shape strategy and build cons
ensus across stakeholders. She is also a Board Advisor to Astroscale\, a B
oard member of the British Aviation Group and Chair of Aviation for Good.
As a Chartered Mathematician\, she previously held a commercial pilot lice
nce and has won industry awards for her contribution. She was appointed an
OBE in the King's Birthday Honours for services to aviation.

SUMMARY:Weybridge Branch: The Azores A330 Glider
DESCRIPTION:On 24 August 2001\, an Airbus A330-200 powered by Rolls-Royce T
rent 700 engines ran out of fuel over the mid-Atlantic and successfully gl
ided 121 kilometres to land safely in the Azores. This remarkable incident
will be explored in detail by Martin Maltby FRAeS\, who was Chief Enginee
r of the Trent 700 engine programme and was closely involved in the subseq
uent investigation.\nMaltby will discuss the root cause of the fuel loss\,
the pilots' actions during the glide descent\, and findings from the form
al inquiry that followed. His unique perspective as a senior engineer dire
ctly involved in the investigation provides valuable insight into both the
technical and operational aspects of this extraordinary aviation event.\n

SUMMARY:Birmingham\, Wolverhampton and Cosford Branch: The real Allo Allo -
  my Dad's story
DESCRIPTION:John Pittwood presents the true story of his father's remarkabl
e wartime experience. His father served as Navigator in a Lancaster bomber
on a mission to bomb a Panzer barracks in France during World War II. Aft
er being shot down\, some crew members managed to parachute to safety and
were fortunate enough to make contact with the Resistance. With their assi
stance\, the crew was guided over the Pyrenees into Spain and eventually m
ade their way back to the United Kingdom. This lecture offers a personal a

SUMMARY:Loughborough Branch: Addressing the future needs of Civil Aerospace
  Manufacture
DESCRIPTION:Future demand for aircraft\, alongside challenging net zero req
uirements\, is driving the need for more efficient manufacturing technolog
ies. Aviation is currently the sixth highest-emitting sector in the UK eco
nomy\, accounting for 8% of UK emissions\, and faces several key challenge
s in meeting the 2050 Climate Change target to reduce emissions by 100%. T
he sector must also address customer demand for future orders whilst recov
ering from an existing backlog.\nThese challenges necessitate a move away
from traditional manufacturing techniques\, particularly if the UK is to c
apitalise on the opportunities presented by the Next Generation Single Ais
le (NGSA) market. This lecture will present research from the University o
f Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre\, demonstrating how UK
industry can leverage academic expertise to address these manufacturing ch
allenges.\nThe speaker\, Mr Stephen Beecher CEng\, MIMechE\, is Senior Sec
tor Engagement Manager for Aerospace at the University of Sheffield AMRC.
A chartered engineer with over 20 years of experience spanning aerospace\,
automotive\, defence and marine sectors\, Stephen holds an MSc in Advance
d Materials from Cranfield University. His aerospace career includes roles
at GE Aviation\, Formaplex and Motherson Group\, where he led qualificati
on programmes for composite materials on the A350 and managed new product
introduction for B787\, A400M and A350 components. He has held Delegated A
uthority for Materials and Processing on A350 designs and implemented qual
ity management systems achieving AS9100 certification. Currently\, Stephen
leads aerospace sector engagement for the AMRC\, identifying collaborativ
e opportunities and supporting research development across the UK's aerosp
ace sector. He recently led composites technical engagement for the £54M
COMPASS programme\, part of a wider £80M investment boost to UK composite
 s manufacturing in South Yorkshire.

SUMMARY:Birmingham\, Wolverhampton and Cosford Branch: The Siege and Battle
  of Habbinya
DESCRIPTION:In May 1941\, Habbaniya was besieged by the Iraqi Army and atta
cked by the Iraq Air Force and Luftwaffe (the Italian Air Force arrived to
o late). The RAF's defensive force consisted of only 4 FTS\, RAF Armoured
Cars\, the RAF Iraq Levies and 300 men of the KORR flown in at the last mi
nute. Squadron Leader Tony Dudgeon (later Air Vice-Marshal) and Wing Comma
nder Larry Ling of 4 FTS pushed through modifications to Audaxes and Oxfor
ds to carry heavy bomb loads against all official opposition. On 2 May\, t
he RAF took the initiative\, defeated the Iraqis and regained Baghdad and
Iraq.\nThis was a little-known but critically important victory in World W
ar 2. Had the RAF lost\, the Axis would have controlled Iraq and gained ac
cess to vital oil supplies. Egypt would likely have fallen\, and British c
ommunications with the Far East would have been severed. The consequences
could have changed the entire course of the war.\nDr Christopher Morris pr
esents this fascinating historical lecture exploring one of the Second Wor
ld War's pivotal but overlooked moments.

SUMMARY:Loughborough Branch: Space-Based Solar Power - How the UK is turnin
 g science fiction into reality
DESCRIPTION:Space-based solar power has long seemed like science fiction—
vast solar arrays orbiting Earth\, beaming clean energy down around the cl
ock. Isaac Asimov envisioned it in 1941. Yet over eighty years later\, gov
ernments and commercial enterprises backed by private capital are investin
g seriously in this technology. The convergence of several factors has cha
nged the landscape: plummeting launch costs\, breakthrough satellite archi
tecture\, and an energy system struggling to meet constant\, affordable\,
and clean power demands as consumption heads towards quadrupling by 2050.\
nMartin Soltau\, Co-CEO of Space Solar\, presents the case that space-base
d solar power is no longer a theoretical curiosity but a viable engineerin
g programme with a clear commercial horizon. He explains why the economics
now stack up—and why the figures might surprise you. With candid discus
sion of the hardest technical challenges—from safely beaming power acros
s thousands of kilometres to assembling structures kilometres wide in orbi
t—Soltau demonstrates how Space Solar and its UK partners are overcoming
these obstacles through systematic demonstrators.\nCould this be the clea
 n energy source delivering cheap\, reliable\, round-the-clock power\, and
might Britain lead the world in its development? This fast-moving presenta
tion covers the physics\, economics and engineering of one of the most amb
itious clean-energy initiatives of our generation\, offering a frank asses
sment of the path from concept to operational space-based power station.\n

SUMMARY:Prestwick Branch 2027 McIntyre Lecture: From Concorde to Boom Super
sonic - The history and future of supersonic air transport
DESCRIPTION:The 2027 McIntyre Lecture will provide a unique insight into th
e future of supersonic air transport. Concorde was a truly remarkable airc
raft that\, for over 27 years\, allowed civil passengers to experience fly
ing at speeds up to Mach 2. However\, Concorde faced significant limitatio
ns\, particularly its inability to fly supersonic over land due to sonic b
oom restrictions. After a tragic crash in July 2000 and a brief return to
service\, Concorde was eventually retired.\nSeveral attempts have been mad
e to develop new civil supersonic aircraft\, encompassing both business je
ts and airliners\, which this lecture will explore in detail. One credible
successor to Concorde has emerged: Overture\, developed by Boom Supersoni
 c. Despite not yet being built\, Overture has already secured 130 orders f
rom major airlines. In 2025\, the XB-1 (a one-third scale supersonic demon
strator) achieved a top speed of Mach 1.18 with no perceptible sonic boom
at ground level.\nProfessor Richard Parker CBE FREng FRAeS\, an advisor to
Boom Supersonic\, will present the fascinating story of aircraft and engi
ne development to date. The lecture will be held on 16 March 2027 at Lectu
re Theatre 2\, Ayr Campus\, University of the West of Scotland. Registrati

SUMMARY:Talk: Saving Amy (Airspeed Oxford)
DESCRIPTION:Join Eric Watkiss for a fascinating talk on the Saving Amy Airs
peed Oxford Project at Hangar 42 Spitfire Visitors Centre in Blackpool. Th
is presentation explores the restoration of a rare Royal Canadian Air Forc
e Airspeed Oxford Mk V Serial Number EB 518 to static exhibition condition
\, created as a memorial to Amy Johnson\, the pioneering aviator who flew
from Blackpool Airport in an Airspeed Oxford on the day she went missing i
n 1941.\nThe restoration project aims to represent Oxford Mk.II V3540\, th
e aircraft in which the famous aviatrix was lost on 5 January 1941 after d
eparting from RAF Squires Gate (now Blackpool Airport). Beyond honouring J
ohnson's legacy\, the exhibit serves as a permanent memorial to all RAF an
d Commonwealth crews who flew the Airspeed Oxford during the Second World
War.\nThe substantial remains of EB518\, built in 1943\, were recovered fr
om Canada where it had served with 35 Service Flying Training School at No
rth Battleford as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Afte
r being struck off charge in August 1946 and left in storage\, the aircraf
t was recovered by the Midland Aircraft Recovery Group in the late 1990s.
Due to deterioration of the wooden airframe structure\, significant recons

SUMMARY:Loughborough Branch: First Waltz - building Blue Danube\, Britain's
  first atomic bomb
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jonathan Aylen\, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Manchest
er Institute of Innovation\, presents an in-depth account of the developme
nt and engineering of Blue Danube – Britain's first atomic bomb\, which
entered service with the RAF during the Cold War.\nThis lively and surpris
ing lecture pieces together how Britain's nuclear deterrent was constructe
d through pragmatic engineering solutions to novel problems. The presentat
ion reveals the real-world challenges faced during development\, including
difficulties in shaping conventional high explosives and ensuring the fre
e-fall bomb could actually leave the aircraft. Notably\, Britain's nuclear
posture was at one stage threatened by a shortage of clockwork components
.\nThe engineering effort drew on an unexpected coalition of British manuf
acturers: a maker of railway tank engines in Leeds\, a firm producing hot
water bottles in Barnsley\, and various obliging engineering firms in Sout
hern England. This account is based on extensive research into Cold War te
chnologies and demonstrates how Britain's early atomic bombs were construc
ted using innovative industrial solutions.\nDr Aylen's expertise spans res
earch on Cold War technologies\, innovations in rolling mill technology\,
revolutionary computer applications at British Rail\, and guided missile d
esign. He is a visiting researcher at the University of Manchester and a r
ecent President of the Newcomen Society.\nRAeS Members\, Associated Branch
Members\, and students attend free of charge. All other attendees are enc
ouraged to make a donation of £3.

age piston-powered aircraft\, from the modest Bulldog and Slingsby T67 to
iconic fighter aircraft including the Mustang\, Bearcat\, Spitfire and man
y others. The presentation provides insight into the performance character
istics and handling of these historic aircraft.\nRod Dean is an experience
d Aviation Consultant who retired from the RAF in 1984 after 21 years of s
ervice\, during which he flew operationally on Hunter and Jaguar aircraft\
, with additional time on the Hawk\, Jet Provost\, Meteor\, Gnat and Chipm
unk. As Strike Command Hunter display pilot at RAF Chivenor in 1972–1973
\, he performed approximately 50 public displays and won the inaugural WD
and HO Wills Solo Jet Display Trophy at the North Weald International Air
Tattoo in 1972.\nOn the civil display circuit\, Rod has piloted numerous W
orld War II and post-war piston fighters including the Mustang\, Corsair\,
  Wildcat\, Sea Fury\, Bearcat\, Hurricane\, Harvard and Skyraider\, alongs
ide vintage jets such as the Meteor\, Vampire\, Venom\, T33\, F86 Sabre an
d Hunter. His CAA Display Authorisation qualifies him to lead formations o
f any size\; he notably led a 19-aircraft Big Wing formation of Spitfires
and Hurricanes at Duxford in September 2000. In 2001\, he led a Hunter tea
m whose display was judged Best Overall Flying Demonstration at RAF Cottes
more Royal International Air Tattoo\, earning the King Hussein Memorial Sw
ord. Rod has recently retired from active display flying following a succe
ssful 2023 season but continues recreational aviation.\nRAeS Members\, Ass
