Chipmunk 80th anniversary photo shoot

A special photography-focused event celebrating the de Havilland Chipmunk's 80th anniversary, held at the historic Old Warden Aerodrome. This Heritage Wings shoot features four Chipmunks representing different eras of the aircraft's service history, including the notable Red 'Royal Chipmunk' WP903, which was flown by Prince Charles during his pilot training at Cambridge University in 1969.

The afternoon session (13:00–17:00) offers carefully composed photographic scenarios rather than static aircraft displays. Participants will capture individual and group arrangements showcasing the distinctive markings and presentations of each aircraft. Period re-enactors from various eras of the Chipmunk's RAF training career will feature in selected scenes, alongside Air Training Corps cadets where possible, bringing to life the aircraft's significant role in British military aviation training.

Old Warden's grass aerodrome, traditional hangars and countryside setting provide an authentic backdrop ideal for capturing the Chipmunk's historical atmosphere. The timing capitalises on autumn afternoon light, with flexible positioning to respond to weather and lighting conditions throughout the session. Participants also have the opportunity to explore the Shuttleworth Collection during opening hours (additional cost), which houses a Chipmunk T.22 in Royal Canadian Air Force colours and numerous other historic aircraft and vehicles.

For many former Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force members, this event offers an opportunity to revisit a cherished aircraft that sparked lifelong aviation interests. For aviation photographers, it presents unhindered 'ops' imagery of this classic trainer at one of Britain's most picturesque heritage airfields.
