WRAeS Talk: Glider G-IZII Accident - What Happened?

Join us for an evening talk presented by Mike Newman on 4th November 2026 at Brooklands Museum. This is a fascinating insight into a significant aviation accident from the pilot's perspective.

On 22 August 2010, a Marganski Swift S-1 glider, G-IZII, was displaying at the Shoreham Air Show when it stalled and crashed onto the runway during landing. Mike Newman, the pilot involved, describes this accident in detail, lifting the lid on what really lies behind this apparent example of pilot error and providing crucial insight into why the accident actually occurred.

Mike Newman is an accomplished glider pilot who flew competition glider aerobatics between 2003 and 2010, becoming a multiple UK Champion at both Intermediate and Unlimited levels. He achieved the highest international placing for a UK pilot at glider Unlimited level in 2010. Since recovering from the accident, Mike has gained a BSc, MSc and PhD in Human Factors and now works for a large UK Defence contractor supporting aviation programmes.

Entry donation: £5 per person (card payment at the door). No donation required from those under 21 or holders of a current Student Union card. The Brooklands Club Members bar is open from 5:30pm with card payment for drinks, and food can be ordered from the bar from 5:45pm. Certificates of Attendance for C.Eng or CPD purposes are available on request. RAeS membership is not required.
