Forty years ago, G-LYNX, a modified Lynx helicopter, raised the maximum speed achieved by a conventional helicopter to a remarkable 400km/h – a record that stands to this day. The advances in rotorcraft technology required to achieve this feat were the culmination of a research programme extending over several decades, involving some of the best minds in British academia and industry.
Dr Richard E Brown will explain the basic science behind the speed record and place the innovations that enabled this achievement in the context of contemporary knowledge. He will then describe how the pioneering research has contributed to and inspired modern understanding of rotorcraft aerodynamics, in terms much broader than often appreciated.
The late F. John Perry holds a prominent place in the history of the speed record. In his later years, John collaborated directly with Richard in several areas of rotorcraft aerodynamics. The talk will conclude by underlining John's legacy as an engineer whose success in forging detailed theoretical analysis into an intuitive understanding of rotorcraft behaviour continues to inspire subsequent generations of engineers.
Dr Brown is well-known internationally for his broad contributions to helicopter and rotor aerodynamics and their impact on vehicle safety. Following a long academic career at Glasgow University and Strathclyde University, he now co-directs Sophrodyne Aerospace, a research and design consultancy specialising in advanced mathematics and computational methods in aerospace. He has authored over one hundred technical papers and is a Fellow of both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. In 2023, Dr Brown received the Bronze Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society for his decades of contributions to helicopter aerodynamics. In 2024, he received the Extraordinary Work in Vertical Flight award from the Vertical Flight Society (UK) for pioneering work on Vortex Ring State, and in 2025, the Royal Aeronautical Society Silver Medal for fundamental contributions to eVTOL and helicopter outwash understanding.
