On 24 August 2001, an Airbus A330-200 jet powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 ran out of fuel mid-Atlantic and successfully glided 121 kilometres to land in the Azores. This lecture welcomes Mr Martin Maltby FRAeS, who was the Chief Engineer of the Trent 700 engine and was closely involved in the subsequent investigation.
The presentation examines the root cause of the incident, the pilots' actions, and the findings of the formal inquiry. The audience are invited to consider how they would have responded to the evolving situation.
Martin Maltby obtained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London and has worked at Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems. Initially, he worked on the RTM322 engine for the Merlin and Apache helicopters before becoming Chief Powerplant Engineer at BAe. He rejoined Rolls-Royce and became Chief Engineer of the Trent 700, Trent 500, and the BR725 for the Gulfstream G650. He subsequently served as Technical Director of the TP400 engine for the A400M military transport before returning as Chief Engineer of the BR710 NextGen business jet engine. Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and was awarded the RAeS Bronze Medal in 2012 for his work on certifying the TP400. He is also President of the RAeS Berlin-Brandenburg Branch.
