On 24 August 2001, an Airbus A330-200 powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines ran out of fuel over the mid-Atlantic and successfully glided 121 kilometres to land safely in the Azores. This remarkable incident will be explored in detail by Martin Maltby FRAeS, who was Chief Engineer of the Trent 700 engine programme and was closely involved in the subsequent investigation.
Maltby will discuss the root cause of the fuel loss, the pilots' actions during the glide descent, and findings from the formal inquiry that followed. His unique perspective as a senior engineer directly involved in the investigation provides valuable insight into both the technical and operational aspects of this extraordinary aviation event.
The lecture takes place at Brooklands Museum Clubhouse in Weybridge, Surrey. Meetings commence at 18:45 GMT with the session running until 20:15. The private Brooklands Club Members bar opens from 17:30, with food available for pre-order, served at 17:45.
All are welcome regardless of Royal Aeronautical Society membership status. Entry donation is £5.00 (card payment preferred), though this is waived for those under 21 or holding a current Student Union card. Certificates of Attendance for Chartered Engineer or Continuing Professional Development purposes are available upon request.
Martin Maltby is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society with extensive experience across major engine programmes, including the RTM322, Trent 500, BR725, TP400, and BR710. He was awarded the RAeS Bronze Medal in 2012 for his work on engine certification and currently serves as President of the RAeS Berlin-Brandenburg Branch.
