About this event

This December 2026 lecture explores how new research is advancing our understanding of rotorcraft aerodynamics. As the aerospace industry enters a new era with rapid development of innovative vehicles and technologies, a deep comprehension of the underlying mathematical physics is essential. This knowledge enables developers to build confidence in their products and to evaluate the practical viability of new concepts.

The event features Dr Richard E Brown, an experienced Aerospace Engineer with a 30-year track record in modelling and understanding aircraft and helicopter aerodynamics. Dr Brown is the founder and leader of Sophrodyne Aerospace, an R&D consultancy specialising in the analysis and understanding of flight vehicles across a diverse spectrum—from hypersonic re-entry vehicles to subsonic drones, helicopters, eVTOL aircraft, and airships. The company is renowned for providing deep design insights through flexible and transparent models supported by advanced computational techniques.

Dr Brown holds a PhD and is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. In 2023, he was awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society's prestigious Bronze Medal in recognition of his contributions over several decades to rotorcraft aerodynamics understanding. Throughout his career, he has assisted numerous companies and organisations worldwide in developing new aerodynamic tools and proposing innovative solutions to complex aerodynamic design challenges. He combines deep theoretical knowledge with practical application, delivering effective and innovative approaches to aerodynamic problems.

This lecture is hosted by the RAeS Prestwick Branch, one of Scotland's two active branches of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
